Since the inception of the Road Master Program in 1998, over 2,900 participants have completed the program.
Roads Scholars and Road Masters
There is a five-year limit to complete all Roads Scholar and/or Road Master courses. Any Roads Scholar and/or Road Master courses taken beyond five years will not count toward your certificate of completion for the program(s). You will need to retake any expired classes to complete the program(s) and graduate. You are permitted to take classes from both programs in the same year, but you must complete your Roads Scholar before you can complete your Road Master.
This interactive course builds on introductory communication topics by exploring advanced communication strategies. Participants will explore how to effectively write emails, communicate with the public via telephone or social media, and follow the chain of command to improve communications for all parties. By mastering their own communication style, participants will be confident in verbal and written exchanges. Communications I and II can be taken in any order.
Those wishing to complete their Road Master certificate or gain a better understanding ofadvanced communication strategies in the workplace, including email communication.

With discussions on directive and relationship behavior, managerial styles, and communication tips, participants will be better prepared for leadership positions and roles.

The concept of going about highway maintenance in a manner that is environmentally acceptable is of great importance to state and local agencies. This workshop explores how to perform our routine highway maintenance and achieve quality production while being environmentally responsible and compliant. Topics discussed include: pollution, why we should be concerned, general permits, ground water protection, surface water management, typical highway maintenance operations, work in and around streams, waste management, and spill prevention and response. This course is designed for supervisors and crew members performing maintenance work on the roadway with a desire to be environmental stewards.

This workshop will show you how to safely and effectively remove snow and ice. It covers pre-trip inspection and maintenance of the truck, plow, and spreader. It also discusses vehicle operation as well as plowing and salting techniques. Finally, this course will help you to identify different snow conditions and solve some common snow and ice removal problems.

This workshop allows participants to better understand the needs of disabled individuals. Participants will learn how to design infrastructure projects that maximize accessibility for all users. Topics for this workshop include proper dimensions and slopes for pedestrian facilities, the correct placement of detectable warning surfaces, and accessibility challenges posed by inflexible existing conditions. The workshop will also cover brief overviews of ADA, the Proposed Accessibility Guidelines for Pedestrian Facilities in the Public Right-of-Way (PROWAG), U.S. Department of Transportation requirements relating to accessibility, and the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet's accessibility program.

This workshop takes participants through the various types of plans used at road departments. Participants discover how to read and interpret the different types of standard symbols and abbreviations. This course discusses features and details contained within plans; how to define the types of scales and identify dimensions found on plans.

This workshop covers the basics of managing all types of roadside vegetation. It discusses the importance of an Integrated Roadside Vegetation Management Program (IRVM) and how to achieve a well-balanced program. Participants will learn to identify and manage invasive weeds that show up on Kentucky roadways. This workshop also discusses mowing guidelines, tree and brush removal, and chemical pesticide storage and application. Finally, participants will hear about the different types of equipment available to help complete all of these tasks.

This classroom-based workshop explains the basics of small bridge and culvert maintenance and inspection. It covers basic bridge types, components, and mechanics as well as the current state of both the nation’s and Kentucky’s bridges. Bridge inspection requirements are also discussed in detail. Participants are given information on how to perform basic maintenance on bridges and how to obtain funding for bridge replacement when necessary.
